Design Process: PBMF 2018

It is spring! And with that, Christiansen Creative has kicked off the beginning of a new Prairie Burn Music Festival season. The annual music festival, hosted at Camp St. Croix, is a fundraiser that raises money for kids to attend one of the amazing YMCA camps in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area. It is a family-friendly event with an array of musical talent, multiple stages, and activities.

Every year our studio selects a new animal to become the Prairie Burn mascot. In the past, we’ve had an owl, a fox, and a porcupine. This year the team is excited to rally around what some might call a trash panda, but more widely is known as a raccoon. After three years of partnering on this project, we’ve decided to share our design process. Believe it or not, it truly begins with a pencil to paper . . . or sharpie if we are feeling daring.


The first wave of sketches had a sea of raccoons with different face shapes, eye shapes, expressions, with or without a body, different tail positions, and more. By lining the contenders up and stepping back, our team was able to pull out the characteristics we thought would make the perfect raccoon to represent Prairie Burn Music Festival 2018.

The next step was pulling it into Adobe Illustrator and blocking it out with color. For this festival we have a library of colors and typography we stay within year after year to help keep the consistency of the event. The colors we played with allow us to see how readable the shapes would be, which is especially important for things like staff shirts and retail items.


In the end, our favorite raccoon logo execution was a one-color logo on a neutral background with a handcrafted look.
